For almost 25 years the Friends of Emerald Lake Park have been working hard to remove weeds from the park and increase the biodiversity, The group has been successful in securing grant funding to remove some of the the large Sycamore Maples which are a significant environmental weed throughout the park, within the areas that have been cleared the the native ferns, Prickly Current Bush (Coprosma), Orchids and other indigenous species are thriving.

Recently another patch of the large weed trees were removed and some revegetation planting was done with the help of students from Emerald Secondary College (pictured below)

During the October and March the group focuses on the removal of the seedlings of the sycamore maple this years dates are Sat 5th, Sun 13th and Thurs 17th of October 2024

Origin: central and eastern Europe and western Asia

Fruit: December to May

Flowers: September to November

Deciduous tree growing 12-30m high An environmental weed, this trees seed are spread by wind and infest bushland areas.

Weedbuster Week 2024

Every Spring, Friends of Emerald Lake Park (FELP) hold activities with the local primary school and community to bust weeds in the park . To kick off their weedbuster week on Saturday 7th September “Trees for Weeds” Swap will be held at Emerald Library from 10am -2pm Here Residents can get information about weed grants, identification of weeds and bring weeds to swap for indigenous plants.
