Weed Watch: Onion Weed/AngledOnion/Three Cornered Garlic (Alium triquetrum)

You may have noticed a sea of white flowers around at the moment and the smell of onions, it’s onion weed!

This plant is considered an environmental weed and easily spread by seed.

Methods to control this weed are digging out ensuring all of the bulb is removed this is best done in winter before flowering, for large infestations of this weed frequent brushcutting or mowing before flowering will stop the plants going to seed and is said to deplete the bulb which will eventually die (although this may take many years)

Common Name: Onion Weed, Three Cornered Garlic

Origin: North West Africa

Flowers: August to November

A perennial bulbous herb growing 10-50cm high, flowers white, triangular stems, grows in moist conditions.
