Weed Watch: Senecio jacobaea (Ragwort)

Botanic Name: Senecio jacobaea

Common Name: Ragwort, St James Wort

Flowers: December – March

Ragwort is an invasive introduced daisy that threatens biodiversity in our landscapes and is poisonous to grazing animals when both fresh and dry.

It is optimal to try to remove or poison before the plants go to seed to reduce the spread

Starting as a basal rossette leaves are oval shaped and coarsely toothed, lower leaves die of as flower stalk emerges.

Can sometimes be confused with australian native daisies of the Senecio genus, if you are not sure if you have ragwort on your property seek help from your local landcarers or weed control experts.
